I'm My Own Worst Critic

Looking through my bookcase, I noticed a book I once found in the dumpster. Yes, some people throw away books, and no I don't like it! The book is a first edition written in 1952, called Philosophies Men Live By. I find within its pages, underlined sentences and words. Looking through the subtext, I deducted the previous owner was a man of God. A priest, pastor, etc.

According to history, Socrates didn't write philosophy. Instead he spoke it in the marketplace. His disciple, Plato, used a form of dialogue to quote him. Aristotle came later to write the teachings. "Know Thyself" was Socrates's guiding principle.

Arguably, quotes are a person's philosophy. Their words are clipped to remain memorable, and then relayed to the public in a romantic sense. Not everything people say is wise, though.

All those clichéd lines and phrases specific to different cultures are words. Words that should not guide you. The only opinion that truly matters is your own. When you doubt yourself, the negative response travels through your brain and increases your seratonin. What does this mean to you? Well, you become depressed, you lose confidence and a sense of accomplishment in yourself. Sometimes you stop eating and sleeping and writing.

I suppose what I am trying to say with all this is; Someone once told me not to allow anyone's negative words to affect my writing. To affect my life. When anyone doubts you, ask yourself, "Do I love what I do? Do I meet all my expectations?" If the answer is "yes" to both, then by all means don't take someone else's opinion to heart.

"Criticism is something we can avoid easily by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing." -Aristotle

I've found myself crying, drinking, eating, praying, driving, shopping, studying, playing a video game, and yelling when a rejection comes in my inbox. Every time, I tried to overcome the negative thoughts that welled within me. The more I did, the worse I felt. So, I've changed my ways. Every day, I receive a rejection, now I laugh and say "me and this person were not meant to be".

I know my work is worth sharing to the world. But to whom, I don't know. One day, I will meet someone who appreciates my stories as much as I do. Who truly understands my message to the world.

The other day, my boyfriend bought me a blank old-fashioned journal from World Market. I think I'm going to write all the quotes that inspire me. Then I'll reflect on the words later on in my life and understand better where my thoughts were headed.

Do you have a quote journal? In a comment, share your favorite quotes. I'd love to hear your inspirations!

A Lost Ship On A Sea of Dreams

When you imagine your life in terms of what is going right, what stands out to you the most? Your family, your job, the fact you wake up everyday or the fact you have food on your table and a place to live? I believe everyone has at least one thing to be thankful for. Life is a gift in itself.

"The difference between fiction and reality is that in fiction everything has to make sense." -Tom Clancy
This quote couldn't be more true.

Like everyone does one time or another, we tend to think life is falling short of our dreams. Reality is not as fun or not as enjoyable as a month-long adventure gallivanting about the wild west on the back of a mustang with a handsome cowboy beside you or eating dinner with a doctor at a villa in Rome or (if it strikes your fancy) winning the Super Bowl with your dream team. Whichever dream inspires you to pursue life, it is a dream worth having indeed. But I've realized the hard way that those dreams can alter your reality. Sometimes you hope for so much more from life than you are receiving. When what you have is way more than enough for you to handle.

An exercise that works is to take time from your day to reflect on life's little blessings. If you created your time chart from last post, then you must know if you have time to use or not. Just take up to 5 minutes (no more) and look at all the good around you. According to experts, it helps to quench unhappiness and inspire a more positive outlook on life.

Remember, just because your dreams don't continue when you wake up, you can always turn them into a lifelong goal. Doesn't it feel great to have something to look forward to at the end of a long day of work? A long day watching the kids? A long day listening to a lecture at school? The money or education your earning today can go towards those long-term goals and each day you're involved in those activities your goals are becoming shorter and shorter.

One day, I will have a degree in something and I will be writing a book in a small cottage in Ireland.

What inspires you to live?

Time Is Not The Enemy

The second month is upon us and we don't know what to do with ourselves. In between work and school, including many other endeavors, we don't reflect on how much time really passes us by. There are 744 hours, 44,640 minutes, and 2,628,000 seconds in one month. I bet each one of us spent most of that time working instead of playing. In my class, Learning Strategies, I learned a valuable skill in time management. Plan everything that you do in a week against how many hours you have available and see where all your wasted time is going.

Readers, I would like each of you to create a chart this week. You can be a pro and create a simple spreadsheet in Access or you can be old-fashioned and write it down on a sheet of paper. Listing everything you do in a typical week, including all those times you feed your cat. As long as it's consistent, that is. Next, record how many projected hours you wish to spend on each task. Finally, leave blanks for the actual amount of time you spent doing it each day. At the end of the week, you will finally know how many hours you spent watching TV instead of studying or on Facebook games instead of writing. Believe me, I've changed my ways since. :)

Sigh! Now doesn't that feel better knowing you actually DO have free time?

Updates:
1) I've sent out maybe 5 queries so far and I've received 2 rejections already! No, I'm not proud, but every time I receive a rejection I feel more empowered to try harder! There's just 35 more queries waiting to be sent...and hopefully NOT rejected.
2) A Day in the Park - A Jane Austen Parody- is completed and ready to be edited. There are many mistakes in prose and I surely wouldn't wish anyone to change my hidden meanings, but why not make it sound like a normal short story? I'm sure the editors will love it even more that way!
3) The Midnight Tree - My short story for Writer's Digest- is almost near completion. After discovering it can be up to 4,000 words, I became a little bit too excited and now I wish to make it much longer.

I hope this month you spend more time with loved ones and that all your resolutions come true! (Don't give up within the first three months. Big mistake.)

Happy Writing!
